Let's get right into writing (whee, for homophones!):

  • Femslash Salad Bar: In the most shocking and surprising twist of all time, I did not somehow complete 6 whole fics and post them in under a week, all while I had a pounding period headache. I know everyone else is as agog as I am. I did, however, complete 3 more, so I had a total of 7/10, which ain't horrible. Links to all that I finished are above. My original plan was to split the 10 fics with 2 each across 5 OTPs (Alana/Margot from Hannibal, Bedelia/Miriam from Hannibal, Eve/Villanelle from Killing Eve, Franziska/Maya from Ace Attorney, and Persephone/Maggie from Whyborne & Griffin). However, it was immediately obvious that my Alana/Margot and Bedelia/Miriam ideas would go way longer, and my Persephone/Maggie ideas were much shorter and also (so I thought) my Franziska/Maya ones, so I realloted. The shorter ideas inevitably got written faster, though, so of the 3 outstanding fics, 2 are Alana/Margot and 1 is Bedelia/Miriam. I hope to finish those up this March. But also! 3 fics is not enough for my whole Bedelia/Miriam idea, so I'm going to be expanding that series into more fics, and also I'd kind of like to add more chapters to my Franziska/Maya fic, so my goal is to do those 2 things in time with the schedule for Femslash Big Bang (which I did not sign up for), just to give myself a sort of deadline. I hope to knock out at least 1 of the 3 pending fics this week. So more news pending!

  • [community profile] worldbuilding_exchange, [community profile] wickedloveex, [community profile] smut4smut: I'll be working on these assignments this week and hope to finish at least 1 (although ideally 2) this week.

  • [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange & [community profile] hurtcomfortex: I've already signed up for these, and am offering some slightly more unusual fandoms (along with my regular staples), so there will be some added suspense when assignments go out! I already have multiple matches across different fandoms for both, so no guarantees what I'll get.

  • [community profile] the_mane_event: I posted my nominations for this, and need to sign up this week. This one has a quick turn-around time, so I'll probably write it as soon as assignments go out. Should be fun!

  • I did skip all the flash exchanges over the last week. I realized belatedly that I had scheduled all my volunteer hours at my figure-skating club last weekend, and also my synchronized skating team skated our routine at an exhibition, so I had zero free-time this weekend. Oops! But good that I remembered before I signed up, right? 🫠

  • There are 2 new exchanges starting their nominations process, both of which I'm sorta considering: [community profile] fluffityfluffexchange for fluff (obviously) and [community profile] fangfrenzyficexchange for vampires. Neither of which are super relevant to my fandoms at the moment, so I might skip them, but I'm watching what other people nominate just in case.

  • Rare Kink Buffet is currently in prompting mode, and I'm watching for anything in my fandoms, but nothing is catching my eye so far. I am not super big on 'any fandom' type prompts. My brain just works 'characters/fandom first, then prompts from there'. Hence why I don't do a lot of things like bulletproof, etc. But maybe something will pop up that's in one of my fandoms and directly relevant to my interests. I won't be super disappointed if I sit this one out. I have more than enough to do otherwise.

In other news: I've finished Killing Eve! I have thoughts!

My Thoughts )

Goals for Next Week: (This is a new section I'm trying!) Complete 1 sign-up. Complete 2 fics (stretch goal of a 3rd). Next weekend I have a synchro competition, so no writing anticipated then. Wish me luck!

ETA: My total 2025 word count as of the end of February was 72K words. Looking good for 100K this year, woo-hoo!

Whoa boy. Last week was an absolute orgy of reading my way through the [personal profile] candyheartsex collection, and commenting on everything that I liked. And there was a lot of amazing fic and art, across so many different fandoms! I really love the big multi-fandom exchanges because they give me a set time to explore reading in other fandoms I miss or otherwise skip over. So, yes, I highly recommend that everyone check out the collection (and those from previous years as well!).

Author reveals have passed, so I can now stop vagueing about what I wrote! 😊 At the end of the day, I did, in fact, write 14 fics, although not 14 treats like I wanted. 😝 My initial assignment was Ace Attorney Phoenix/Edgeworth fic for Odalyn Good for the Soul, and then I picked up one Pinch Hit for psychomachia for The Shadow (1994) A Thousand Cuts. Overall, my breakdown was:
  • Ace Attorney: 7 fics, 4 Phoenix/Edgeworth, 1 Edgeworth & Franziska & Pess, 1 Edgeworth & Pess, and 1 Franziska & Sebastian

  • Hannibal (TV): 2 fics, both Hannibal/Will

  • Whyborne & Griffin: 2 fics, one Whyborne/Griffin and the other Guinivere & Whyborne

  • The Shadow (1994): 2 fics, both Lamont Cranston/Shiwan Khan

  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine & Columbo crossover: 1 fic, Garak & Columbo

All are now up on my AO3, for anyone interested.

Some reflections: [personal profile] candyheartsex is the exchange that actually brought my attention back to exchanges overall last year, where I caught it right before reveals and snuck in a couple of Ace Attorney treats, but not as many as I wanted. I made a mental note then that it was a lot of fun, and I wanted to do it 4realz this year. As expected, the Ace Attorney prompts this year were amazing, and one thing I really like about them is that I get to hear what other characters people want to see interacting. It gives me plot bunnies I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. The couple of treats I didn't get to were also for AA, for some ships I'd never really thought much about before, so I didn't get to those as quickly (and those recips also weren't on the treatless list, so they were lower priority 🤣). Next year, though, maybe I'll have my ideas more together and be able to expand my range more.

I knew I needed to treat all the Hannibal and Whyborne & Griffin prompts that weren't mine, because those recips clearly deserve it for having such excellent taste. 😊 I am really loving all the ideas for Hannibal I get from exchange prompts; I would have written waaaaaaaaay less for this fandom (possibly none) without them, because all my Hannigram thoughts were just sort of sitting in the back of my head, half-baked, before. The challenges/deadlines are really forcing me to get them out. As for Whyborne & Griffin, this is a fandom where I have a super hard time coming up with ideas on my own. My general thoughts are just, "That was lovely. More, please!" But I don't have any clear conception of what that "more" should entail. So other people's requests are an absolute lifesaver for me!

On The Shadow... Okay, this is one of the things I love best about exchanges: I have watched that movie probably every year since it came out. That DVD (and, yes, I still have a DVD!) is well-worn, lol. I love it to pieces, and I love the sexy enemy tension between The Shadow and Khan. But did I ever think to write anything for it? No, because apparently my brain misses super-obvious things like this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I never even thought to look for it in the tag set. Then I saw it come up as a pinch hit and had a moment of "holy shit, why have I never written that before?!?!" So, yes, that is why I need and love exchanges.

Similarly, Garak and Columbo meeting? I just happened to glance at the crossover prompts, IDEK why because I am usually not a crossovers fan, and I saw that one, and I immediately burst out laughing. Because they are perfect together! The professional liar and the professional lie-detector machine! It was one of those rare fics that just leapt into my head fully-formed, and the hardest part was writing down the words as fast as they were sparring with each other in my brain. I actually finished that fic before sign-ups even closed. And I had to keep checking AO3 that no one had written it before, because in retrospect it seemed so obvious! Anyway, I am delighted to have gotten to write it.

Anyway, that was [personal profile] candyheartsex, absolutely fantastic, A++ would recommend, can't wait for next year!

Now for something completely different...
  • I am waaaaaay behind on Femslash Salad Bar. I have 1.5 fics written on my computer (but the completed one is not posted yet, natch!). I had hoped to write a lot this weekend, but I had terrible headaches from Friday afternoon all through Saturday, so I couldn't even look at a computer screen. In theory, if I write 1 + a bit stories per day (and also post them 😱), I'll still finish by February 28th. So, yeah, that's my race this week. Wish me luck!

  • [community profile] worldbuilding_exchange: I have an assignment, and a lovely one at that! Unfortunately, I have too many ideas for what I want to write for it, so I need to let those all percolate for a minute. My rough guess is that I'm going to have at least 2 fics come out of this, though. I just don't see any way to combine 2 of these prompts at the moment, and I can't leave one hanging, either! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • [community profile] wickedloveex: I have an assignment here, too! And, good lord, was that an adventure. I had a potential recip when I signed up, and lots of other people had nominated fandoms/pairings I liked, so I figured this would be a straightforward match. Then, the one matchable recip deleted their request, and I had an "oh crap!" moment. But then I got the horrible headache and couldn't check my computer when sign-ups closed. I fully expected to wake up the next morning and discover that I was one of the unmatchables and would need to delete my sign-up. However, I was not! Three potential recips signed up super last minute, so I actually didn't even know who I was going to get! And I'd also thought that I was going to be an Initial Pinch Hit, for sure, but people jumped in to offer some of my requests last-minute there, too. So, it did turn out wonderfully. It was just a complete rollercoaster (and, honestly, I'm kind of grateful I had the headache during the most nerve-wracking hours of that, so I missed the stress). But happy ending!

  • [community profile] smut4smut: I have signed up and already have multiple matches here, so no drama llamas, lol. This one will be fun, I think. I'm curious to see what I get for my assignment.

  • [community profile] hurtcomfortex: I'm all ready to sign up for this one. Sign-ups open Saturday, woo-hoo!

  • [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange: I put my nominations in. Although I need to think if there are any other fandoms I want. I have until Wednesday to noodle on this.

  • [community profile] the_mane_event: Here's a new one that popped up, but is relevant to my interests! It's focused on all things hair. And given that 1) Hannibal had amazingly hot chest and belly hair, and 2) I have two separate ships where one half my OTP caused the other half to go permanently bald (Charles/Erik from X-Men and Clark/Lex for Smallville), it would really be silly of me to sit this one out. I will put my nominations in this week, as a treat once I get some of my Femslash Salad Bar fics posted (motivation!).

  • I'm still on the fence about whether to sign up for the Tiny Beans Flash Exchange, for cat-themed fics. Sign-ups close Tuesday, and fics are due Saturday, so that's cutting it close with my other obligations. On the other hand: KITTY! I think that I'm going to see where I get with Femslash Salad Bar by EOD today, and if I'm cruising, then I'll let myself sign up for kitties, but if not, I will bow out.

  • By the way, I figured out what I'm doing about Femslash Big Bang. I'm not big on Tumblr events, or even the more social parts of big bangs. And part of what I would've developed for this, I'm also covering with Femslash Salad Bar. So my thought is: write as much of my fic as possible for Femslash Salad Bar. Do not do Femslash Big Bang. However, I will still have some gaps in my series after Femslash Salad Bar is over, so I will stick to the Femslash Big Bang schedule just on my own, to get all of those done. This just saves me a lot of hassle, so I think it is a good plan.

And finally: I finished S3 of Killing Eve, and I really liked it! I think the back half of S2 just dragged for me because I was not into the Aaron Peel plotline, and that took up SOOOO much screentime. I am going to watch S4, and I fully expect to be frustrated because I do not like major character death, lol. However, I will try to get the bulk of my writing for Eve/Villanelle done before that episode! And then, hopefully, get inspired for lots of fix-it fics. 😝

I posted all the things I was procrastinating posting last week! I am very proud of myself for this. I think one of the thing I like about exchanges is that I can post-dump my draft onto AO3 when I'm tired, and then ignore it for a while because it's not yet reveals, and then come back later and do my 3+ read-throughs to fix any wonkiness. For some reason, this doesn't fill me with the dread of impending deadline the way posting a draft to AO3 does. Why not? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Brains are weird!

[personal profile] candyheartsex gets it own bullet list this week:
  • OMG, I have an adorable fanart gift! Seriously, look at Phoenix and Pess! They are adorable together, and I am in love! 😍 I have requested art many times in the (far-distant) past, and this is the first time I've gotten it, and it's better than I could ever have imagined! I am so in awe of people who can draw such good art.

  • I am currently reading my way through the collection and commenting/kudosing everything I like. My plan goes like this:
    1. Go through every fandom I know enough to understand what's going in, in alphabetical order, and open up all the works where I even remotely comprehend the characters/summary.

    2. Except in the previous, I skip Original Works because there are too many. I do Original Works next.

    3. Sort by word count with lowest first to find all the art, and comment on all of that that I haven't already.

    4. Sort by lowest hits, and try to find things I can read canon-blind to comment on those.

I'm currently halfway through the S's on #1. There are a lot of big fandoms that start with S, lol.

  • You know how I said I wanted to write 14 treats, but I'd only gotten 1 done, but I was hoping to get at least a couple more? Well, I didn't write 14, but I did write a lot of treats this last week. I feel very accomplished. 😊

Other stuff I've done:
  • Now I'm behind on Femslash Salad Bar again, because I spent all last week on Candy Hearts. So that will be my top priority this coming week. I don't have any other fics due this month, so I'm feeling good about my odds for finishing this (infamous last words).

  • There are a couple prompts I could write for [community profile] valentines_boxes and [community profile] femgiftboxes, although not as many as I was hoping for. Those aren't currently in a time crunch, though, so I have time to noodle on some of the fandoms I'm less comfy with. I did end up sitting out a couple of the flash exchanges, because I would've only been able to match on OWs, and I have enough fandoms that I'm excited about right now that OW doesn't appeal to me as much.

  • [community profile] worldbuilding_exchange: I signed up, and there are already a couple of other recips I'd be excited to write for! I am looking forward to this one. I do enjoy a good world-build. 😊

  • [community profile] wickedloveex: I need to sign up for this soon, in the next day or so. I just have to line up all my offers, since there were a bunch of interesting nominations that were not mine.

  • [community profile] smut4smut: I really need to do some work on my freeforms for this, because sign-ups are going to sneak right up on me, and it always takes me way longer to sign-up for exchanges with freeforms.

  • [community profile] hurtcomfortex: I've got my nominations in, and it looks like other people in my fandoms are nominating too, so high hopes for this one!

  • [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange: Getting ready to nominate for this one. I love experimental fic formats, so I'm really looking forward to this exchange, too.

So far I am enjoying S3 of Killing Eve, maybe more than S2 (or, at least, the end of S2). I should finish this sometime next week, and I have to think of what series I'll watch next.

Oof! So, prompting closed for [community profile] threesentenceficathon, and I spent a chunk of this morning posting everything I wrote for it to AO3. Why do I find the posting to be the hardest part of everything? IDEK! I ended up with 21 ficlets, across 7 fandoms, 2 of which are things that I would never have written for otherwise. Although, in retrospect, it's weird that I'd never done anything for Ancient Egyptian RPF before (and I've only done one very silly thing for Ancient Egyptian Religion, too). I guess this is me keeping my (former) work and fannish lives separate? Who knows! I bunched everything by fandom when posting to AO3, because that's already quite enough spam, thank you very much. Now my Recent page is full of nonsense (not that that's any different from usual...).

Speaking of how much I hate posting: Saturday I was despairing that I might have bit off more than I could chew with Femslash Salad Bar, because out of 10 supposed fics, I'd written half of one and about three sentences of another. Then, Sunday, I went ahead and finished three! But (you guessed it, from my clever foreshadowing!) I haven't posted them yet, because posting is hard and I hate it. Blech. I will try to do that today, so it's not hanging over my shoulder. However, I'm back on track for finishing this challenge on time, so hooray!

Other stuff I wrote this week:
  • Lunar New Year's Wood Snake Exchange: Snakes! This was so much fun to write, because snakes! I also hope to get a gift, because snakes! But in any case, I get to look at other people's gifts, because snakes! Truly, there has never been a flash exchange more suited to my interests. 😍🐍

  • [community profile] au5k: Yay, I wrote the thing, and it was so much fun, and I love that this thing exists so much! I haven't posted it yet (See? It's a theme!) because the due date is not until Feb 14, and I want to see if it comes up as a pinch hint, so I can snag that. If not, random recip, you are getting a loooooong treat.

Other stuff, in some particular order:
  • [personal profile] candyheartsex: I have a gift! 😍 Which is to be expected, since the due date was last weekend, but still! I am very excited! I have until next weekend to write any treats I want to write, yet somehow I am still procrastinating. We'll see how I do.

  • Prompts for [community profile] valentines_boxes and [community profile] femgiftboxes are supposed to show up today. I will be eyeing those, to see if there's anything good I should write.

  • There are soooo many flash exchanges in nominations/sign-ups right now! There's a Ghost Flash, and a Cat Flash, and Made Them Do It flash. So far, it doesn't look like anyone from my fandoms has turned up, and none of those themes are SO EXCITING to me that I'd sign up even if I had to do Original Works (like Snake Flash was), so I'm keeping an eye on them, but might sit them all out, who knows?

  • [community profile] worldbuilding_exchange: Sign-ups for this are soon, and I'm excited for it! Hoping people from some of my fandoms show up, but this is a theme I like so well that I'm willing to stretch out of my comfort zone.

  • [community profile] wickedloveex: Noms end this week, and sign-ups start next weekend. I can already tell that people from many of my fandoms are eyeing this one, and I am looking forward to seeing what I get!

  • [community profile] smut4smut: I threw in my nominations for this, too. I'm currently wading my way through all the freeform tags, and I have problems because I want to sign up with approximately 40 million different things, oops!

  • [community profile] hurtcomfortex: This is a theme I can go either way on, but someone else already nominated some of my pairings for this, huzzah! So I nominated the rest and am waiting to see what this one brings during sign-ups (which are still quite a ways off).

  • Several things I've written are going to reveals this week, so I need to do my final read-through on AO3 to spot any final typos. (Somehow, there are always more typos. Somehow, I also always notice last minute that I've got some stupid repetitive sentence structure, too. Somehow, like this. Somehow, I don't notice this during the entire editing phase. Somehow, it's like repetitive 'somehows' are invisible until the day before reveals. :P)

  • [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange is starting up nominations next week, which is another theme that is super relevant to my interests, so I have to noodle on that a bit to think what I want to request. (Hannibal and Ace Attorney, obviously, but I need to think about other fandoms that work well with the theme.)

  • There's also Rare Kink Buffet and [community profile] small_fandoms Drabblethon going on this month. I'm keeping an eye on these, but iffy whether to join in yet. And, of course, I still haven't decided what to do about Femslash Big Bang. Oh well, there's still time!

I'm still watching Killing Eve, although I didn't like S2 quite as much as S1. S1 was a joy all the way through. S2 dragged for me in that there was waaaaaaay too much Aaron Peel, detracting from the stuff I cared about. I actually had the same problem with Hannibal S3b with Francis Dolarhyde. Like, they're both objectively fine secondary villains, but I still absolutely resent every second of screentime they take away from the main cast. We'll see how S3 rubs me.

Still enjoying 'How to Survive Camping'. Fun stuff.

I threw a couple of books that always end up on pinch-hit lists onto my library hold list. Unfortunately, the hold lists are all very long, but I'm finding this an entertaining way to get book recs.

Still doodling and origami'ing. Good times!

Ugh, my building has a mouse infestation. I've caught 10(!) in my traps already. D: And my neighbors all have hefty tallies, too. Exterminator is coming on Wednesday. Mice in my kitchen is now my new DNW.

Stuff I wrote this week:
  1. My [community profile] goreswap assignment! I had so much fun writing this one, and it's a pairing I'm definitely going to be writing again.

  2. 2 PHs, for 2 different exchanges. Both fandoms I wouldn't have thought to write outside of the prompts, so I was very glad to see these come up and poke at my brain.

Exchanges/Sign-Ups/Etc.:
  • Nothing popped up for [community profile] highadrenalineexchange that I could write, so I'm sitting that one out. Which gives me some capacity for:

  • Femslash Salad Bar! I have several femslash pairings that aren't be requested as often as I'd like, so I figured this would be a good way to focus some time on them.

  • I also signed up for Lunar New Year's Wood Snake Exchange, which is scary because there are a lot of art prompts, and I think I might offer some art, since many prompts are animal-only (namely snakes), and that's something I can actually make a go at. I do love cute snakes! 😍🐍

  • [community profile] au5k - I still haven't finished that treat I desperately want to write. I should hurry up on that, since there's not much time left, and lots of other things coming up.

  • [personal profile] candyheartsex - I haven't written as many treats as I would have liked. (Largely because the number I would have liked - 14 - was absurd. We'll see if I fit any others in. I'd like to get at least 1-2 more!

  • [community profile] threesentenceficathon - I haven't written anymore for a while. I might pop in before prompts close, if I feel like it, or not. I felt like I got a good few days out of this one, so I'm okay if that was my one burst of inspiration.

  • [community profile] worldbuilding_exchange - I've got my nominations in and am planning my sign-up. This one will be fun! And I have loads of prompts that are more worldbuilding focused, so I'm really excited to see what I'll get for this one, too.

  • [community profile] wickedloveex - My nominations are in for this one too, so just waiting for sign-ups, which aren't for a while yet.

  • [community profile] fffx - I have all my fics in for this one, and there are no more pinch hits, so I should be safe, right? I'm excited for this collection to go live. There are some interesting-looking fandoms/tags in there.

  • Still noodling on Femslash Big Bang. I'm thinking about getting a Tumblr account, just because I do have some art, now that I've started drawing up again. TBD!

Non-exchange stuff:
  • Still loving Killing Eve! I'm near the end of S2 now.

  • Lots of progress on 'How to Survive Camping' this week, and it has gotten so gooooooood!

  • I've started up drawing again. Focusing mostly on animals for now, and having loads of fun. I need to figure out how I want to do coloring. I've been doing the line drawings on paper, then scanning, and then trying coloring both on paper and of the scan. It's more fun to color on paper for me, but that doesn't scan as well (loses a lot of vividness) as opposed to digital coloring. Decisions, decisions...

  • I've started up origami again too. I'm doing mostly flowers at the moment. Nothing too rigorous or difficult, just enjoying having another fun distraction for my brain. Also: whoa boy, do some sites have lousy instructions! I've ended up on sites with overkill instructions instead, just to stay on the safe side. The former technical writer in me weeps at some of these.

Since I have, like, 5 F/F OTPs at the moment, I signed up for Femslash Salad Bar, in order to celebrate Femslash February! If anyone else wants their own board, you can request them here (or else make your own!).

I chose poisons and occasions for mine and will (hopefully!) be posting fills for all these throughout February:

Kantayra's Salad Bar )

I'm also noting Ficathon: Bring Her Bleeding Heart To Me (A Dark Femslash Commentfic Meme for Femslash February), because it is highly relevant to my interests. There's also Femslash February Funkathon: A Musical Promptfest, but that's further from my wheelhouse.

Right, so, in a conclusion to the epic saga that will surprise absolutely nobody, I ended up claiming the [community profile] fffx pinch hit that I promised myself I wouldn't look at, wrote it, and posted it. My only hope is that no more PHs get posted that I can claim, because I clearly have zero will power.

People did end up signing up for things I could write for [community profile] goreswap, yay! So I signed up for that, got my assignment (which is a FANTASTIC prompt I noticed last-minute and added another offer to game for it!), and currently am writing my way through that. It is tons of fun to write so far! I'm maybe 1/3 of the way through, hoping to finish up this week.

No one has requested any of my fandoms yet for [community profile] highadrenalineexchange, so the jury's still out on that one. There's one Original Work prompt I like that was requested (and I nominated the prompt in the first place, as a safety in case I signed up), but I'm not sure if I'm hyped enough about writing it yet that I would sign up if that was my guaranteed match. I'm still noodling on it (and hoping for more requests to show up that I could choose from).

I've started the [community profile] au5k treat that I knew I had to write the moment I saw the prompt. I'm hoping to finish this one up this week too, and then I'm wondering if I should just post straight-up or wait to double-check that this recip doesn't come back as a Post-Deadline Pinch Hit, in which case I could easily claim them. Decisions, decisions... Oh well, I still have time.

A couple of new things on the horizon: I threw in my nominations for [community profile] wickedloveex since it's a new exchange and the theme is basically "every single pairing [personal profile] kantayra has ever loved". [community profile] worldbuilding_exchange is also starting back up, and I have several fandoms where I care about worldbuilding waaaaay more than I care about ships (and some fandoms where I care about both!), so I'm excited for that one. I am also debating creating a Tumblr account solely so that I can participate in Femslash Big Bang, because there is a bang-length femslash fic for a super rare pair that I absolutely want to write, and I know that I will never make the time to write it if there's not a challenge motivation for it. On the other hand, not so hot about having to create a Tumblr account. :/ Maybe one isn't required? But I can't find any way to ask the mod that doesn't presume I already have a Tumblr account, lol. I'll think about it... Also, maybe I'll ask around if there are other challenges I could write this for that are DW- or AO3-based.

I am now wondering if I should set a goal of writing 100k this year. I say this only because it's not yet the end of January, and I've already written 30k. :P The last time I hit 100k (and it was almost 200k) was back in 2020. Yay, Covid, I think? o.O In any case, this reinforces my opinion that I tend to write a lot during stressful times. So I have no idea how long this'll last, but it's great escapism for the moment!

Fandom-wise:
- I didn't read any more on How To Survive Camping this week. I will finish at some point, but I'm not super invested, especially when compared to...
- Killing Eve! I started watching this and am through the first season. This show has been on my radar for some time, because Eve/Villanelle clicks all my shipping boxes. I'd heard spoilers for the final season, though, and that kind of turned me off, since I do not like character deaths in my pairings. And also I heard people say it was "basically a comedy", and I'm not sure why that discouraged me, because I think exactly the same thing about Hannibal TV, but there you are, my brain is not logical. However, S1 was amazing, and I love Eve/Villanelle so much, and I continue to think that comedic gore/murder is incredibly funny, so Villanelle is absolutely my fave! ♥ Also, I had been pronouncing Villanelle's name wrong in my head this whole time: turns out it's "Villa Nell" not "Villain Elle", oops! Not sure if I'll watch the final season when I get to that. Decision pending!
- I grabbed a bunch of my old art supplies out of storage. Every so often, I do this thing where I think "I should get better at drawing!" but then I end up only drawing animals and plants, which I am already pretty good at, and not people, which is where I need the most work, because I honestly don't want to stare at people for that long, even if it's my own drawing, lol. So this time I'm thinking I'll just let myself draw cool animals and plants, since my fingers have clearly made their decision on this subject. Also, it seems like it would be fun to learn how to create digital art, since that didn't become a thing until well after I was out of art class, so I might research how to do that. (Beyond, y'know, mouse doodles in MS Paint during boring meetings at work, which are fine for random doodles, but drawing with a mouse is so grossly inferior to drawing with a pencil/pen, it's not even funny.
- I'm thinking of playing around with origami again. This idea came to me after reading The Neuroscience of Navigation and how origami helps train your brain for 3D rotation of objects. I haven't done it in...probably decades now? I can't even remember! So it should be fun to play with for a bit.
- I'm also thinking of taking up juggling again. Spoilers: I am not good at juggling. At my best, I could juggle three balls maybe 5 or 6 times, and 4 balls 1-2 times if I was SUPER lucky. I was better at contact juggling and used to have a pretty cool butterfly, but last time I tried that, I had totally forgotten it, so I might start that up again too. (Where are my old balls for this? Fuck if I know!)
- I also need to sign up for my spring skating competitions, blargh! So much money for so much stress! (Competitions are fun at exactly one time: the moment of elation as you step off the ice, when you crazily think "whee, I want to do this again!") I've got all my jumps back after my bout of Covid over New Years, though, so I don't really have any excuses.

Today is a holiday, whee! No work! I'm spending my free time looking at the [community profile] fffx pinch hit that I promised myself last week I wouldn't look at. Oops...

I got my last treats in for [community profile] fandomtrees, and those have gone live. I also finally had time (read: needed a new way to procrastinate) and got in a bunch of fills for [community profile] threesentenceficathon; I will eventually collect those when the fest is over and post on AO3. So far it's been a lot of Hannibal, Ace Attorney, a surprising resurgence of Doctor Who (?!), some Whyborne & Griffin, and then a few odds and ends. I also succeeded in writing my assignment for [personal profile] candyheartsex and posted that along with a treat. I'm midway through another treat for that, plus I've got at least 2 others planned. (And about a zillion more marked on my 'wish I had time to write' list.) I am also still very seriously eyeing one of the prompts for [community profile] au5k; I'm hoping I'll have time to sneak in a treat there.

In newer news (heh), I'm eyeing the nominations and sign-ups for [community profile] highadrenalineexchange and [community profile] goreswap. I need to see if there's anything I could actually write in either of those, before I know whether to sign up. (I am sending vibes for people to sign up with Hannibal requests for both!)

I finished watching the latest season of Shetland. I felt 'meh' about the mystery, as I usually do with shows that try to drag a single mystery through too many episodes. I really think that 2-3 episodes is the most any single mystery can stand. The solution to this one had the same problem most of these shows do: several of the red herrings were way more interesting than the actual solution. And when spoilers ), mundane solutions just sort of pale in comparison. The season would've been stronger as a mystery without those red herrings, and stronger in terms of drama without the final solution. However, still loving the dynamic between Tosh and Ruth!

I also watched the final episode of Vera, which was fine. That was very much a 'casual watch' show for me.

I finished reading 'Dark and Magical Places: The Neuroscience of Navigation' this week, too, which was interesting! Especially all the different places in the brain where things can go wrong and fuck up people's mental maps, those are always fun to read about.

I am finally heading back home(!) tomorrow, and I am also out of library books for the moment. I've started to read 'How to Survive Camping', since it had been on my radar for a while and I heard that the author's going to take it offline since it's getting officially published (power to them!). I'll liking it all right so far. It's got good horror humor in it, for sure. But I'm not enjoying it quite as much as some of the creepypasta I was reading the last time I dipped into r/sleepnomore. On the other hand, I'm not very far in yet, so I haven't gotten fully hooked into the plot. I did love the one on how her brother is not her brother, though. Lulz and creepy both, just what I'm here for!

It is freaking cold here today, and it's supposed to be tomorrow morning too, and I have to go to skating at 5:30 in the morning, blech. Figure skating should be a summer sport, solely for freeze-babies like me. 🥶

I've been filling more prompts and PHs. There are two more I want to write for [community profile] fandomtrees, which will now for sure make the reveal date of January 18, since everyone has 2 fills. So, uh, wish me luck on getting that done in time.

I've been meaning to join [community profile] threesentenceficathon, but other priorities have prevented me from doing so, so far. Maybe when I finish everything else I want to write. So...like...May? 🤣

I need to buckle down and write my [personal profile] candyheartsex assignment. My idea is half-formed, and I wish it were shorter, but it's not, so I still need to let it percolate a bit before I can do my recip's request justice. There are a bunch of treats I want to write for this exchange, too. I completed 1 treat while it was still nominations period, but ideally I'd like to fit in another 5-6. (I may have a problem with wanting to write too many treats.)

Speaking of which, there's an amazing prompt in [community profile] au5k, and I absolutely want that fic to exist, and I want to write it as a treat, but goddamn it, there are so many exchanges already! 😭 (And I'm refusing to look at one of the [community profile] fffx PHs that just dropped. I have already done enough for that exchange; I do not need to write another 5k...or 10k... (Help!))

I did finish 'Murder After Christmas', which was an enjoyable enough ride. I found it a bit dither-y in the middle, and there were far too many characters who would, like, confess to random shit they didn't do. But I liked the ending, and it was a good light-weight, over-Christmas read. People who are hardcore into mysteries would probably be more the target audience than me.

For some reason, I feel like posting again. No clue why, and I'm pretty sure by this time my posts are going almost completely into the void. Kind of like a fresh start, which is either neat or terrifying. Anyway, I'm thinking of posting once a week, unless it feels like a burden again. I hope it doesn't start to feel like a burden again.

Here's where I currently stand fannishly:
Hannibal, Fic Exchanges, Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett & Basil Rathbone), Shetland, Wylding Hall, The Westing Game, Murder After Christmas, The Neuroscience of Navigation )

That is all for now.

So far, this is just a safe shelter, in case I need an account at some later date. All my entries are still on My LiveJournal and all my fic is on My Fic Journal. Toodles!
